BCGDV Blackbox

BCG Digital Ventures is an American venture capital and incubation firm headquarterd in Manhattan Beach, California. A pioneer in specialised investments in technology and digital engineering, BCG has innovated on consulting techniques to help grow mid-stage technology startups around the world. Across the globe, BVG representatives lead specialized office tours for prospective corporate partners. These tours begin with a short video presentation. Operating across multiple industries, BVG needed a tool that allowed them to quickly assemble a custom playlist of videos as an introduction to the business and the ventures they’ve launched.

As part of Bad Assembly, I teamed up with BCGDV to create a custom video presentation app called Blackbox, a touch-based application with three main sections: Overview, Create and Presets. ‘Overview’ automatically plays a video detailing BCG’s beliefs and accomplishments. This feature is useful as a quick-and-easy way to trigger a presentation on the fly.

‘Create’ allows users to pick and choose up to five ventures to be added to a presentation queue. ‘Presets’ represents a series of pre-made presentations. Examples of pre-made presentations include both office and industry specific titles (Berlin, Sydney, London, Consumer Goods, Technology & Media, etc.). BCG partners may also have preset presentations at the ready in anticipation of potential corporate partners and investors.

The 'Create' section also features a filtering system that allows the ventures to be sorted by industry, center, and/or year. Blackbox also features custom play controls that allow for quick progression between the venture videos. Simply tapping on a venture logo begins the matching video within the presentation queue.

Blackbox is designed and built to run on multiple display configurations, each comprised of a series of touchscreen televisions mounted side-by-side. In order for the app to properly fit within each display, we adopted a 120x120 grid as most tv resolutions are divisible by 120 both vertically and horizontally.
